Three central-eastern departments put on orange alert for flooding on Thursday

Météo-France has placed three central-eastern departments, Ain, Jura and Haute-Savoie, on orange alert for rain and flooding from 6 a.m. on Thursday, the forecast service said in its bulletin on Wednesday.

The rainy disturbance observed on Wednesday “From Poitou to the Ardennes it will move on Thursday along a Bordelais-Limousin-Jura-Northern Alps axis, where it will remain for several hours, sometimes causing prolonged rainfall,” particularly in the three departments under orange surveillance, explains Météo-France.

These rains, which promise to be intense with significant accumulations, occur “in a context of soils that are already quite wet for the season.” They should evacuate at the end of the day from the southeast.

Fifty-three departments under surveillance for yellow rain

In the three departments on orange alert, “accumulations” (…) It will be between 50 and 80 millimetres in 12 hours and could reach between 70 and 100 millimetres throughout the episode, particularly on the western slopes of the relief..

“Rivers may overflow their banks or landslides may occur” Météo-France warns. Precipitation should be preceded by a south-westerly wind “strong enough”, with gusts of 60 to 70 kilometers per hour, weakening during the day.

Fifty-three departments are also on yellow alert due to the forecast rain, including the west of the Massif Central, Isère, Savoie and the north of the Hautes-Alpes.
