Three dead in Honduras after shootout between police and criminals

At least three suspected criminals died on Tuesday and another was arrested in a shootout with Honduran National Police officers, a police source reported.

The accident occurred in the town of Catacamas, Olancho department, in eastern Honduras, where Three policewomen “confronted hitmen and captured one”Honduran police said in a message on X.

According to the police version, the three men fired on the police officers, who repelled the attack, resulting in the death of three suspected criminals.

For now, Police have not released the identity of the deceased or the detainee..

The scene of the clash was cordoned off by Honduran police, pending the arrival of personnel from the Public Ministry of Forensic Medicine.

Violence in Hondurasconsidered one of the most violent countries in the world, without being at war, leaves an average of ten to twelve murders per dayaccording to local authorities.

Authorities attribute much of the crime to organized crime groups, drug trafficking and gangs, the most dangerous being Mara Salvatrucha (MS) and Barrio-18, which are waging a struggle for control of territories in several Honduran cities.

Violence caused by organized crime, drug trafficking and gangs is one of the main problems afflicting this Central American country, which has nearly 9.9 million inhabitants, most of whom live in poverty.
