timed and restricted access

Visit the Trevi Fountain for one euro And limit the number of short-term rentals In the historic centre of the Eternal City there are some of the proposals proposed by the tourist council of Rome, Alessandro Onorato, to combat mass tourism.

“I would be in favor of studying a new access, restricted and on a schedulewith a system of reservation“: free for Romans and paying, with a symbolic euro, for tourists,” Onorato explained in an interview with Corriere della Sera.

The aim of this possible measure would be reduce clutter around the monument and discourage pizza and ice cream consumption in the squareto avoid the waste accumulating on the floor and stairs of one of the largest monumental fountains of the Roman Baroque.

5 euros to enter the Pantheon

This is not the first time that the City of Rome has studied measures to limit tourist access and last summer a tax was introduced. five euros to enter the Pantheon, the most visited monument in Italy, although it is free for city dwellers.

Councillor Onorato would also like to reduce the number of short-term rentals (less than 30 days) which has almost doubled in the capital in recent years, from 17,000 in 2018 to more than 30,000 currently.

“Tourists run the risk of staying in reused basements or garages, with enormous damage to the image of our city,” he warned.

Onorato asks the central government of Giorgia Meloni for more autonomy for the regions in granting licenses for this type of accommodation and thus being able to preserve the places affected by mass tourism where there are practically no neighbors and the neighborhood shops and artisan workshops that they tend to frequent. disappear.

“We can limit the number of restaurants or chip shops in the historic centre, but we cannot prevent the opening of non-hotel facilities,” the mayor complains.

“We want to put an end, perhaps for two or three years, to safeguarding historical and artistic heritagethe quality of trade and the right of residence, but our hands are tied,” he laments.

Rome was the top tourist city in Europe in 2023, with around 50 million visitors, according to the European City Tourism Report from the City Destinations Alliance portal.
