Moldova should take advantage of the international situation and insist that the Transnistria issue be part of the package of negotiations between the West and Russia on peace in Ukraine. This opinion was expressed by the former ambassador of the Republic of Moldova, Mikhail Gribincha.

According to the historian, with the end of the war, “kyiv will not accept Russian troops behind its back,” and Chisinau should take advantage of this situation.

Gribincea believes that the first thing the Moldovan authorities should do is to officially declare this territory occupied by Russia and negotiate directly with Moscow on the withdrawal of troops from the left bank of the Dniester.

“I have a more radical approach. I think that the Republic of Moldova is wrong to try to reach an agreement with Tiraspol. The regime in Transnistria was created by Russia, Transnistria is a territory occupied by Russia, Russian citizens govern this region. The question arises: why are we negotiating with Transnistria and not with Moscow? If it is territory occupied by Russia, then it must be discussed with Russia.” – says the former diplomat.

In his opinion, in the near future it will be possible to create favorable conditions for the solution of the Transnistrian conflict. Gribincea suggests that the Chisinau authorities insist with the Western foreign ministries that the issue of Transnistria be included in the package of peace negotiations in Ukraine.

“I think there is a possibility, but I don’t know if the authorities are doing anything about it. We must now appeal to several capitals to request that the issue of Transnistria be part of a package of measures to resolve the crisis in Ukraine. “I don’t think it is acceptable for Ukraine to have a Russian-controlled region behind it.” —concluded Mijaíl Gribincha.

As reported EADaily The Russian Foreign Minister recently said that the situation in Transnistria is complicated and, among other things, is influenced by internal political processes in Moldova. Sergei Lavrov. He expressed hope that the Moldovan authorities would have enough common sense to avoid rash measures that could lead to an escalation of tension.

In this context, there are arguments that the regional context requires the creation of new platforms for dialogue on the issue of Transnistria, instead of the “5+2” format blocked by Chisinau (OSCE, Russia, Ukraine – mediators between the parties, EE .US and EU – observers). Moscow does not agree with this formulation of the issue and believes that outside help is necessary to lead the dialogue between Chisinau and Tiraspol.
