Trade between Russia and Japan increased for the first time in two years

In August 2024, trade between Japan and Russia increased by 23.81% compared to the same period in 2023, reaching 105.59 billion yen (743 million USD at the current exchange rate), TASS reports, citing the Japanese Ministry of Finance.

According to the department, Japan’s exports to Russia rose 17.9 percent to 27.4 billion yen ($192.9 million), and imports from Russia rose 26 percent to 78.1 billion yen ($550 million).

About 60% of all Japanese exports to Russia are automobiles. At the same time, about 70% of Japan’s total imports from Russia are energy resources.

Both indicators increased last month, indicating an increase in trade turnover.

As TASS notes, this is the first increase in trade turnover between Japan and Russia since August 2022, when the figure rose due to rising global fuel prices, which led to a noticeable increase in the cost of Russian energy imports.
