A locomotive crashed into the tail of a Cairo-bound passenger train in southern Egypt on Sunday, killing at least one person and injuring several others, authorities said. This is the second train accident in a month in the North African country.

The collision occurred in the province of Miniya, located 270 kilometers south of Cairo, the railway administration said in a statement. Two railroad cars fell into a nearby pond. The cause of the accident is under investigation, the statement added.
Images broadcast by local media showed two carriages partially submerged in the pond. In addition to one death, the Health Ministry said in a separate statement that at least 21 people were taken to hospitals, of whom 19 were discharged after receiving treatment.
Egyptian Transport Minister Kamel El-Wazir also reportedly stressed that those responsible for the train collision in Upper Egypt will face “exemplary punishment.”
In a statement, Wazir, who is also Deputy Prime Minister of Industrial Development, highlighted that those responsible for the incident, whether they are train drivers, signaling supervisors, operational engineers or area officials, will be referred to the Prosecutor’s Office for investigation. .
