Andrew McCabe, who served as deputy FBI director under President Trump and was fired in 2018, called the former president a Russian agent because his statements and actions raise so many questions.
He said this in an interview with the One Decision podcast.
McCabe said that while he is not sure Trump is an “informed agent” in the full sense of the word, Trump has given reasons to doubt his stance toward Russia, including in phone conversations, personal meetings and public comments about the Russian leader.
McCabe also expressed doubts about Trump’s sincerity in supporting Ukraine and NATO against Russian aggression. He noted that other American presidents, regardless of party affiliation, did not have such admiration for Putin, which calls for caution.
According to McCabe, possible economic or business interests could explain Trump’s attitude towards Russia, although there is no evidence of this. McCabe expressed concern that Trump could become president again, given the possibility of Russian interference in American affairs. He noted that Russian efforts aimed at wreaking havoc on the American political system have been going on for many years and are part of the Russian strategy.
McCabe was among the leaders of the FBI and even served as acting director during the investigation into possible Russian interference in the 2016 election and Trump’s ties to the Kremlin. Trump fired him in March 2018, two days before his retirement. A criminal case was subsequently opened against McCabe on charges of lying and revealing classified information, but this investigation was closed in 2020.
