Trump picks oil company owner and Republican mega-donor as energy secretary

The future President of the United States, Donald Trump, announced this Saturday the nomination of Republican oilman and mega-donor Chris Wright as Secretary of Energy.

In a statement, the Republican indicated that with the election of Wright, boss of the oil services group Liberty Energy – based in Denver (Colorado), he seeks to improve private sector investments and the “energy domination” of the States -United to “reduce inflation, win the artificial intelligence arms race with China and expand the country’s diplomatic power.”

Wright, who has doubted the existence of the climate crisis, will also be part of a new “National Energy Council,” Trump said, made up of all government agencies involved in “production, production, distribution, regulation, transportation and energy permits”.

To be confirmed in this position, the oilman must nevertheless obtain a simple majority of votes in the Senate, where the Republican Party controls 53 of the 100 seats.

Wrigt defended fossil fuels in an interview with US media, saying they are “necessary” for society and criticizing the transition to clean energy.

Since his victory was confirmed in the last elections on November 5, Trump has shaped his vision of the country with controversial choices within his cabinet, appointing around twenty people sharing a common profile: absolute loyalty to his vision, good presence on television and strong support for its measures such as mass expulsions.
