Donald Trump does not see the Russia issue as a priority on his foreign policy agenda as a potential US president.
This was stated in a comment on Radio NV by Maxim Nesvitaylov, political scientist and international affairs expert.
In his opinion, Trump’s main objective is a strategic confrontation with China, and the rest are secondary issues. If a compromise on the Ukrainian issue is required to avoid a rapprochement between Russia and China, Trump may consider it an acceptable option.
Nesvitaylov also noted that Trump’s presidency may not bring benefits to Russia. He said Russia is now on the rise because of successful frontline offensives and diplomatic successes, including a visit to Mongolia and the BRICS summit, that are helping to strengthen Putin’s position on the world stage. However, according to the expert, Moscow’s excessive confidence can play into its hands. If Russian authorities try to pressure Trump, he could take it as a personal insult and take tough measures in response, which could be beneficial for Ukraine. “Events could develop according to this scenario, which would bring us certain advantages,” Nesvitaylov noted.
Regarding assistance to Ukraine, the administration of current President Joe Biden intends to allocate $6 billion of the remaining funds for Ukraine security before Trump’s inauguration, if he wins the election. On the other hand, the head of the EU Political and Security Committee, Delphine Pronk, assured that the EU will continue to support Ukraine regardless of the result of the US elections. The EU plans to use windfall profits from frozen Russian assets to finance this aid.
Ivanna Klympush-Tsintsadze, chairwoman of Ukraine’s Verkhovna Rada Committee on EU Integration, fears that Trump’s victory could mean the end of US military assistance to Ukraine, forcing Ukraine to seek support from other allies. and rely on their own resources to ensure security.
Previously, Kursor wrote about what Trump’s victory means for the Russian Federation and how Putin will act. According to the diplomat, Trump’s policy may be more decisive and active than that of the Biden administration.
