Trump will review US policy towards Iran – media

Donald Trump plans sweeping changes to US policy, including a major review of relations with Iran, which sources say could be one of the biggest foreign policy department shake-ups in recent years.

Iran International writes about this.

The former president not only intends to reconsider the United States’ strategy abroad, but also to fight against the so-called “deep state” that he believes exists. Trump plans to fire thousands of government employees, including members of the diplomatic corps, CNN reports.

Trump has already identified a key figure who will lead the transition process at the State Department. He entrusted this role to Brian Hook, who previously served as special envoy for Iran and was a supporter of tough sanctions against this country. Hook noted that the sanctions strategy has affected the Iranian economy and finances, and US pressure has significantly weakened Tehran’s financial capabilities. He had previously said the goal of the policy was to secure a new deal with Iran and weaken its economy.

Iran was wary of Trump’s return as it could mean greater sanctions and a deepening conflict. Even during his first presidential term, Trump withdrew the United States from the nuclear deal and launched an attack on top Iranian commander Qassem Soleimani, further worsening already difficult relations between the countries. US intelligence agencies say Trump and Hook were placed on Iran’s “kill list” following these actions.

Jason Brodsky, policy director for Stand Up Against a Nuclear Iran, said Hook’s appointment to a key position at the State Department signals a possible return to the “maximum pressure” strategy on Iran that Trump has previously promoted.

However, Ruel Mark Gerecht, a former CIA official and Iran specialist, believes that the transition process will not necessarily lead to a change of course on Iran. He noted that decisions on the most important issues related to the nuclear program will ultimately remain the responsibility of the president himself.

Kursor previously wrote that Putin addressed Trump on the occasion of his election victory.

Russian President Putin also said whether he would call Donald Trump after his election victory.
