Muslim leaders in the United States who supported Donald Trump in the election expressed deep disappointment with his personal decisions. According to Reuters, representatives of the Muslim community, whose votes helped Trump win key states such as Michigan and Pennsylvania, believe their expectations were disappointed.
Particularly dissatisfied was the appointment of Marco Rubio as Secretary of State. Rubio is known for his harsh comments against Hamas, which he called “ferocious animals,” and his vocal support for Israel. Rabiul Chaudhuri, one of the leaders of the Muslims for Trump campaign, said: “Trump won because of us and we are not happy with his election. “These appointments go against the interests of the Muslim community.”
AMEEN executive director Rexinaldo Nazarco noted that Trump’s actions in support of peace were expected by Muslims, but the administration was made up of “extremely pro-Israel and militaristic people.” Nazarko noted that the community will continue to seek an end to the conflict in the Gaza Strip and the protection of Palestinian interests.
Former University of Minnesota professor Hassan Abdel Salam said Trump’s personnel policies were even more radical than expected. “It seems that he is moving towards an openly Zionist regime. “We were always skeptical, but now it is clear that they were simply using us,” he added.
Some members of the Arab-American community, like Rola McKee, vice chairwoman of the Michigan Republican Party, are still hoping for change. “Trump wants peace and his actions should be measured by results,” he said.
The criticism also affected other Trump appointees. Michael Waltz, candidate for Pentagon chief, is known for his support of Israel. Alice Stefanik, nominated for the position of permanent representative of the United States to the UN, openly opposed anti-Israel initiatives. The possible appointment of Mike Huckabee as ambassador to Israel has sparked outrage over his support for Israeli policies in the West Bank.
