Trump’s nominee for attorney general, Matt Gaetz, withdraws candidacy over involvement in sex trafficking case

Matt Gaetz, candidate for attorney general of the President-elect of the United States, Donald Trump, presented this Thursday his resignation considering that his appointment was “unfairly becoming a distraction” due to his investigation into allegations of sexual misconduct.

“It is clear that my confirmation was unfairly a distraction from the very important work of the Trump/Vance transition. There is no time to waste in a needlessly prolonged fight in Washington,” I will therefore withdraw my name to become Attorney General”, announced in X.

“The Trump Justice Department must be ready and in place from day one,” said Gaetz, who assured that before making this decision he had received the support of “many” senators. The Upper House is responsible for validating the proposals that the magnate presents for his new administration.

“I remain determined to ensure that Donald J. Trump is the most successful president in history. “I will always be honored that President Trump nominated me to lead the Department of Justice and I am confident that he will save America,” he concluded.

For his part, Donald Trump highlighted Gaetz’s efforts to win the nomination for attorney general. ““I was doing very well.” he declared on his Truth account, his own social network. “At the same time, he did not want to distract the administration, for which he has the greatest respect. Matt has a wonderful future and I look forward to all the great things he will do,” he said .

This proposal has not yet caught on in the most traditional faction of the Republican Party, which still remembers how one of its great champions, Kevin McCarthy, ended up leaving the presidency of the House of Representatives after an initiative presented by Gaetz himself.

Likewise, the former Florida congressman opened an investigation with the Ethics Committee of the House of Representatives concerning an alleged case of inappropriate sexual behavior with a minor under the age of 17, illicit drug use and corruption. The commission has already completed its investigations and has in its hands a final report that could end up being buried because Gaetz resigned as a congressman in early November due to incompatibility with his appointment.
