The Republican Party took control of the US Senate on Tuesday by winning 51 seats, enough to have a majority, after the senator from Nebraska, Déb Fischer, was re-elected, a notable victory for the Red Party, which thus took control of the Senate from the Democratic Party.
Fischer defeated independent candidate Dan Osborn tonight, while two other Republicans won the seats of two Democratic senators. The Republican candidate for the state of Ohio defeated his rival Sherrod Brown, who was seeking re-election at the polls, and Virginia Governor Jim Justice will fill the seat vacated by the independent senator, a former Democrat. Joe Machin.
U.S. Senate Republican Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, 82 and in office since 2007, announced earlier this year that he would step down from office after his term (in this election nomination) ends. We therefore do not know who will be the next majority leader of this chamber.
