New York Times columnist Thomas Friedman expressed deep concern about the possible consequences of Donald Trump’s election victory.
Haaretz writes about this.
In an interview with the Galei IDF radio station, Friedman noted that such a development could have negative consequences for Israel.
He said his main fear is that Trump could distance himself from Israel’s problems by allowing Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to take risky steps such as annexing the Gaza Strip and areas in southern Lebanon, which he said could lead to the destruction of Israel.
Friedman emphasized that Trump distrusted Netanyahu even during his presidency, despite their cooperation under the Abraham Accords. He added that he fears Trump’s inaction, who could simply allow Netanyahu to implement any plan, including the annexation of territories, and keep them under control.
Friedman recalled Trump’s campaign promise to “end wars, not start them,” and emphasized that it is still unclear what exactly was meant by this statement. He also noted that current US President Joe Biden provides significant support to Israel, despite mixed global assessments of this policy. Trump, like Netanyahu, tends to care primarily about personal interests, which, according to Friedman, could lead him to leave Israeli affairs unattended, thus creating a dangerous situation.
Friedman highlighted that, despite the lack of real possibilities for the occupation of Gaza and southern Lebanon, there are groups in Israel who support this idea, considering it significant, despite its conflict with pragmatic calculations.
Previously, Kursor reported that Trump would “go all out” and put the Russian Federation in its place.
Trump does not consider the Russian Federation to be his main problem, but he may change his mind if the Kremlin offends him.
