Turner, ACS subsidiary in the United States begins work on modernizing Terminal 3 West of San Francisco International Airport (SFO). The design and development of these was carried out in alliance with Gensler and TEF, and will cost $2.6 billion.
This project will redefine the passenger experience with a refocus on comfort, efficiency and durability. It includes a 200,000 square foot expansion of Terminal 3, 650,000 square feet of renovation and a new six-story building that will house airline lounges and operational office spaces.
As part of the modernization project, the company was also responsible for reorganization of passenger spaceby building temporary corridors for redirect them safely around the construction area.
This process of once was intended to reduce the complexity of the multiple corridor transfers during the duration of the project.
The 1,000-foot west corridor and the 400-foot east corridor were manufactured according to 11 modules in an air freight yard nearby to avoid interruptions to travelers. After careful technical planning seeking to minimise the impact on airport operations and travellers, the modules were transported across the aerodrome for 11 consecutive nights.
State-of-the-art equipment
The modernization of the Terminal 3 West will incorporate state-of-the-art amenities, expanded concessions and enhanced safety features. Passengers will benefit a redesigned recording areaimproved baggage handling systems and a more intuitive wayfinding experience. The modernization also includes the installation of advanced technological systems aimed at streamlining airport operations and improving passenger flow.

Innovation, quality and sustainability
An important aspect of this project is its commitment to sustainability. The terminal will incorporate energy-efficient systems, water-efficient accessories and materials from sustainable suppliers. The project aims to obtain LEED Platinum certificationdemonstrating SFO’s commitment to environmental responsibility.

The expansion portion of the project is expected to open in fall 2027, with the east side of Terminal 3 opening in 2029.
