Two workers die after two cranes fall in the port of El Musel in Gijón

Two workers died and three others were injured, one seriously, in the collapse of a crane in the port of El Musel, in Gijón, according to initial information provided to EFE by the emergency services.

The accident occurred around 11:07 a.m. for unknown reasons at the Osa quay, where the two cranes fell onto part of the platform.

Several teams from the Gijón fire brigade went to the scene to collaborate in the rescue and search operations, since in the first moments it was thought that a worker could have fallen into the sea.

The Emergency Medical Service (SAMU) moved several ambulances and mobile intensive care units to the port, one of which transported the most seriously injured worker to the Central University Hospital of Asturias, in Oviedo.

Another mobile intensive care unit transferred another injured person to the Cabueñes hospital, in Gijón, with a reserved prognosis, while a basic support ambulance transferred the third employee with minor injuries to the same health center, according to data provided by SAMU.

While the Civil Guard continues to try to clarify the causes of the accident, the City Council of Gijón/Xixón has declared two days of mourning during which the institutional agenda of the mayor and councilors will be suspended and the flags of the city hall and municipal offices will fly at half-mast.
