Typhoon Yagi devastates Vietnam, killing at least 24 and injuring hundreds

Vietnamese authorities have raised the death toll to 24 from heavy rains, floods and landslides caused by Typhoon Yagi, which has been downgraded to a tropical storm but continues to wreak havoc in the north of the country on Monday.

The Vietnam Meteorological Department warned on Monday of heavy rains and the risk of floods and landslides due to Yagi.the most powerful typhoon recorded this year in Asia and which had also previously caused at least 22 deaths in China and the Philippines.

According to the latest casualty report, Yagi has caused 24 deaths in northern Vietnam since Saturday, mainly due to falling trees and landslides, while there are also 229 injured and three missing, media reported. VN Express.

The Ministry of Agriculture said that 110,000 hectares of rice fields were flooded by heavy rains in cities like Hai Phong, Thai Binh, Hung Yen and Hai Duong.

Vietnamese authorities are continuing to survey the damage caused by the typhoon, which struck the city of Haiphong, home to more than two million people and a major hub for technology companies, early Saturday afternoon and hit Hanoi, with a population of 8.5 million.

Yagi brought heavy rain and sustained winds of 118 kilometers per hour to Vietnam, with maximum gusts of up to 149 kilometers per hour.

Before arrival, Vietnamese authorities have evacuated around 50,000 people and nearly half a million soldiers are mobilized to help with emergency tasks.

En route to Vietnam, the typhoon passed through the Chinese island province of Hainan on Friday, where it killed at least two people and injured 92, and left more than 1.5 million homes without power that day.

Earlier this week, Yagi passed north of the Philippine island of Luzon, on which Manila is located, where emergency crews reported 20 dead, 26 missing and 22 injured.
