UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has appointed Canadian Georgette Gagnon as his special envoy for Afghanistan. She replaced German Markus Potzel, Ariana News reports today, September 4.
“Georgette Gagnon has a solid track record of more than 28 years leading strategic initiatives in the areas of human rights, humanitarian action and development in conflict and post-conflict situations.” – says the UN statement.
Since 2021, Gagnon has served as the UN Secretary-General’s Deputy Special Representative for Libya and Humanitarian Coordinator. Previously, she served as Director of Field Operations and Technical Cooperation at the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, where she led country missions.
