Unemployment falls in the Canary Islands, with almost 10,000 fewer unemployed than a year ago

The Canary Islands close the month of August as one of the communities in which unemployment decreases, recording 443 fewer unemployedwhich represents a decrease of 0.27% compared to the data recorded the previous month.

Year-on-year, unemployment has decreased by 9,884 people (-5.72%). With all this, the archipelago accumulates a total of 163,045 people without work, the lowest figure since March 2008.

As August draws to a close,and three consecutive months of declines have already accumulated unemployment in the islands. However, León recalled that “taking into account that there will be months when unemployment increases, the Canary Islands continue to have historical data on people who work. If we look at the variation from one year to the next, the evolution has been favorable, so the trend, always based on prudence, has been one of stability,” he noted.

In annual comparison, unemployment decreased in all sectors. In percentage terms, the decrease is mainly due to Agriculture of 755 people (-21.03%), followed by Industry with 542 fewer unemployed (-8.32%), while in Construction it was reduced by 1,064 people (-6.77%); in Commerce by 1,576 people (-5.65%) and in Hospitality by 1,407 people (-5.57%).

By gender, unemployment fell more among men last August, standing at -0.39% (270 people). Among women, it decreased by -0.18% (173 people). Compared to August 2023, it decreased more in the women’s group, namely by 5,797 (-5.79%), while in the men’s group it decreased by 4,087 (-5.61%).

Regarding the long-term unemploymentThere was a slight monthly increase in August (0.09%), which means 69 additional unemployed people in one month. However, in one year, there was a decrease of 4,003 people (-5.10%) in this group (those who have been unemployed for more than a year).

In the eighth month of the year, unemployment fell on all the islands if we compare it with the data recorded in July. In absolute terms, 154 fewer unemployed were registered in Gran Canaria; 113 in Fuerteventura, while Tenerife had 65 fewer. La Palma saw a decrease of 41 people; Lanzarote recorded a decrease of 31 unemployed; La Gomera represented a decrease of 29 people and in El Hierro it was reduced by 10 people. Regarding the interannual variation, it decreased in all the islands, except in La Palma, where it increased by 123 people (1.92%).

Regarding the contracts recorded in August, there is an increase of 3,537 additional contracts (6.65%) compared to the same month of 2023, reaching 56,739. Of these new contracts, 23,408 are of indefinite duration and represent 41.26%.

The Deputy Minister of Employment of the Regional Executive, Isabel León, said on Tuesday, after seeing the unemployment data, that “The Canary Islands continue to create jobs, taking into account that in August of last year unemployment increased.”
