UNESCO has just confirmed its “maximum concern” about the “super -operation of the aquifer in Donyan, since“ three of the five masses of groundwater remain in a poor quantitative state, ”according to the last report of the World Heritage Convention.

Assessment of the state of preservation of registered spaces as a world heritage presented on July 4 shows that this situation “emphasizes that the pressure on the aquifer has not yet facilitated, despite measures begun as the end of concessions of extraction or sealing 296 illegal wells”. “It is necessary to strengthen the action to establish stable thresholds,” the document ends.

The Committee warns that if the decline is not canceled, “continuous degradation”, on which Donyan will be avocated by “significant negative consequences”, the National Park will be at the risk of announcing UNESCO as an endangered world heritage.

Although the problem of super -exploration of water is the most serious, this is not the only aspect specified by the UN experts. Experts argue that “the continuous decrease in the populations of winter birds is also very alarming.” And this, adding, “this encourages the successful breeding of several endangered species in 2023 and 2024,” but “the general trend indicates continuous environmental stress” associated with “climate change and other wider trends”.

UNESCO insists that the development of an eco -hydrological plan for the national park “too slowly” and that “acceleration of this work is vital.”

Although measures such as closing wells are welcome in the report, the creation of user communities (which occur from the ads of water -bearing horizons in poor condition) or acquiring Veta La Palma real estate to ensure the function of her bird shelter; He does not cease to “postpone the adaptation program to change the climate” and that “information sent as part of the Aznellar mining project is not enough to evaluate its potential impact”.

The exam is closed, asking Spain to send an updated report on the state of preservation of Donyan until February 1, 2026, which implements measures that indicate the revaluation of the organization.
