Unicaja Málaga shines against Real Madrid and ends the white hegemony in the Spanish Super Cup

The third time was the charm. This time, Unicaja Málaga did not succumb to its nemesis, Real Madrid, and won the Spanish Super Cup title (80-90). It ended six years of tyranny and did so by offering top-notch basketball, confirming the quality of a team capable of anything. Those of Ibon Navarro did not hesitate. They aimed for the title from the start and from the first jump, they took the initiative. Their first quarter was excellent and, despite the reaction of the white team, their legs did not tremble and they ended up closing the final with great integrity.

Chus Mateo’s team had to climb a mountain too high. Their poor start of 5-21 cost them too much and they were unable to snatch victory from a team in total trance. They had a dead end reaction in the last part of the second quarter, but they were unable to confirm their improvement afterwards.

In tow

The start of the match could not have been worse for Real Madrid. Erratic attack, numerous ball losses, slow circulation… Typical pre-season sensations, but they came up against the genius of Unicaja Málaga in their game. Ibon Navarro’s men came out to bite and from the start made their mark on the floor of the Palacio de los Deportes de Murcia.

The Andalusian team had a windstorm in the first minutes. They signed a partial 0-12 in the blink of an eye that forced Chus Mateo to call a timeout. “Is this really what you want?”, the coach told his players. They had to react if they did not want to lose the Spanish Super Cup.

REAL MADRID

They did it, but it cost them much more. Unicaja Málaga dominated all aspects of the game during the first 15 minutes, eventually leading by 17 points. Very precise in the launch and with a very inspired Kameron Taylor they set off all the alarms in the white team.

Completely level, Real Madrid finally managed to unlock the Malaguistas’ lock and directly access the final thanks to a superb score of 13-0 in the last part of the first half. Gaby Deck imposed himself above the lot and Chus Mateo’s men began to win the battle on the offensive rebound to leave the title in the air. Four points difference and the feeling that the equality would last until the last moments.
