A severe snowstorm in South Africa has left two people dead and forced the closure of major roads in the country over the weekend. Both people died of hypothermia after becoming trapped in their vehicles due to snow on the N3 highway, which connects Johannesburg and the coastal city of Durban, according to ABCNews.
According to information from this media, one of the victims is a 39-year-old woman stuck in a minibus.
For two days, dozens of trucks, cars and other vehicles were trapped in the snowstorm, unusually late for this time of year. Food and hot drinks were distributed to drivers who spent hours in police custody.
After the storms, there are now fears that melting snow could cause flooding. In several provinces, schools are still closed. “Parents are asked to keep their children away from areas where there is water, especially rivers and dams,” authorities warned.
