Urda prepares to receive thousands of pilgrims starting this weekend with the opening of the jubilee year

The Toledan city of Urda (2,491 inhabitants) has everything planned to welcome thousands of pilgrims on the occasion of the Jubilee Year of the Most Holy Christ of the True Cross.

This Sunday, September 22, the Archbishop of Toledo, Francisco Cerro Chaves, will open the Holy Door of the Minor Basilica of Christ of the True Cross. Between 120 and 150 pilgrims will arrive at this ceremony and will depart this Friday from the Cathedral of Toledo (XIII Diocesan Pilgrimage).

Before the opening of the Holy Door, all the brotherhoods that will participate in the procession to the Basilica of Christ of the True Cross will be received in the parish of San Juan Bautista, where a mass will be celebrated presided over by the Archbishop of Toledo.

Among other activities, last Wednesday, a novena in which every day Mass will be celebrated by a different bishop, including the Archbishop Emeritus of Toledo, Braulio Rodríguez; the bishop of Ciudad Real, Gerardo Melgar; the bishop emeritus of Segovia, Ángel Rubio; the bishop emeritus of Albacete, Ángel Fernández, the cardinal emeritus of Madrid, Antonio María Rouco; the bishop emeritus of Sigüenza, Atilano Rodríguez; Cardinal Emeritus of Madrid, Carlos Osoro; the auxiliary bishop of Getafe, José María Avendaño or the bishop of Cuenca, José María Yanguas.

The Urda City Council, chaired by Mayor Manuel Galán, has also planned for this Saturday, as events prior to the opening of the Jubilee Year, a Municipal Music concert and fireworks.

The Christ of the True Cross, also known as Christ of La Mancha, brings together pilgrims from all the provinces of the region, and many others from Spain.

Throughout the year, there will be celebrations and pilgrimages as in January 2025 by the brotherhoods and confraternities; the pilgrimage of Adolescence and Youth, which will take place from March 28 to 30; and spiritual exercises during Lent at the House of Spirituality of the Holy Christ, on the weekends of March 7 to 9 and April 4 to 5. Vigils, adorations and pilgrimages will complete a year of activities where the door of the basilica will open daily.
