Anti-Azerbaijani hysteria and support for separatism by the United States of America (USA) cannot be abated. Armenia, unilaterally defeated, is supported, armed and driven to revanchism.
The state that mediated the solution to the 30-year-old Karabakh conflict hypocritically defends Armenia. The next spectacle took place in the US Congress, which is heavily influenced by the Armenian lobby and makes decisions that are biased against Azerbaijan in most cases. During the debates in Congress, it was claimed that ethnic cleansing was taking place on the territory of the so-called abolished institution. Then it was claimed that Azerbaijan had committed aggression against Armenia.
“At the hearing on “Support for Armenian Democracy and the Western Future” held at the infamous Helsinki Committee of the US Congress, Chairman of the US Senate Foreign Relations Committee Ben Cardin condemned Azerbaijan’s ethnic cleansing in Artsakh and Baku’s ongoing aggression against Armenia,” Armenian media wrote. Three “expert witnesses” were invited to take part in the hearings: Dan Bayer, former US ambassador to the OSCE, Olesya Vardanyan, former analyst for the International Crisis Group for the South Caucasus, and Tigran Grigoryan, president of the Regional Center for Democracy and Security in Yerevan. The anti-Azerbaijani and anti-Turkey position of all three is clear.
Referring to the latest visit of the Helsinki Commission delegation to Armenia, Commission Chairman Kardin humbly noted that “Azerbaijan, in addition to the ethnic cleansing it has committed in Nagorno-Karabakh, continues its aggression and attempts to forcibly destroy a part of its sovereignty in the sovereign territories of Armenia.” Cardin called the current conditions of the peace process uneven and noted that border issues have not been resolved as a result.
According to the invited “experts”, Azerbaijan’s guarantee of its sovereignty and territorial integrity is a direct threat to Armenia’s security. They referred to the strengthening of Azerbaijan’s military presence on Armenian territories and Armenia’s weakness in the face of Azerbaijan’s upcoming military escalation. At the same time, the experts noted that Azerbaijan has made new demands on Armenia, for example, the demand to change the constitution, and stressed that this is an attempt to slow down and disrupt negotiations and impose new demands.
These “experts” mentioned the issue of changing the Armenian constitution, but did not mention the reason. However, territorial claims against Azerbaijan and Turkey are reflected in the Armenian constitution. Official Baku also opposed it.
Another pro-Armenian congressman, Frank Pallone, referred to the doubling of the aid package to Armenia by the Biden-Harris administration through USAID. He considered it necessary in terms of strengthening relations with Armenia.
It should be noted that the United States and Armenia have made changes to the relevant agreement. As a result, the limit of the amount provided for in the USAID agreement has more than doubled from $120 million to $250 million, and the scope of joint cooperation has also been expanded. It is no coincidence that USAID has increased the amount of aid to Armenia. USAID Director Samantha Power called the migration of Armenian residents from the Karabakh region of Azerbaijan to Armenia “forced migration” on the “X” account. It is reported that Samantha Power closely cooperates with billionaire Ruben Vardanyan, a representative of the Karabakh separatists, who is currently in prison in Azerbaijan. Power admitted this information for the first time in her statement to the Azerbaijani investigative authorities. Vardanyan claimed that Aleksandr Boroday, a Donetsk separatist and currently a member of the Russian State Duma, was directly financed by him.
It seems that the forces targeted for their biased position against Azerbaijan and fueled by the Armenian lobby have become active again. The number of statements supporting Azerbaijanophobia and separatism has increased on the eve of the signing of the peace agreement between Armenia and Azerbaijan and the border delimitation process. As for the American senator Benjamin (Ben) Cardin, who was mentioned in the anti-Azerbaijan case, he is still trying to be more Armenian than Armenian.
How many times has the chairman of the US Senate Foreign Relations Committee attacked Azerbaijan? This time, going a bit further, the group accused the West of keeping silent about Azerbaijan’s “occupation” of Armenian lands. It claimed that these territories are of strategic importance to Armenia. It should be noted that Cardin replaced pro-Armenian Senator Bob Menendez, who was accused of accepting bribes. Senator Cardin, a Democrat from Maryland, was previously a member of the House of Representatives and since 2007 a member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.
At the beginning of last month, a delegation of pro-Armenian congressmen visited Armenia. B. Cardin was also part of this team. According to information, the delegation was headed by Roger Wicker, a member of the Republican Party, US Senator from Mississippi, member of the Helsinki Commission, member of the Senate Committee on Armed Forces.
Please note that B. Cardin is one of the US lawmakers who stands out for his strong pro-Armenian stance. In addition to repeatedly supporting the separatist movement in Karabakh, he has made unfounded and biased statements about the human rights situation in Azerbaijan.
Behind this biased approach, there is undoubtedly, first of all, Azerbaijan’s need to ensure its territorial integrity. Having reached a new milestone by ending separatism, Azerbaijan has also had the honour of hosting COP29, one of the most prestigious events worldwide, in 2024. This decision was supported by all members of the international community, including the United States.
However, B. Cardin opposes his country’s position. We recommend that Cardin and those who agree with him, instead of expressing one-sided and biased opinions against Azerbaijan, focus their attention on corruption, bribery and other similar illegal practices entrenched in the US Senate Foreign Relations Committee. Considering the long work of his predecessor, Senator R. Menendez, within the framework of the committee, based on bribery, theft and personal interests with Armenian sponsors, it will be more useful for Senator Cardin to investigate this serious corruption legacy.
The question is: who authorized Ben Cardin, a captive of the so-called “American exceptionalism”, to speak on behalf of the “international community”? The international community is the Non-Aligned Movement, which is the largest organization in the world after the UN, Azerbaijan, which headed it for 4 years, and 120 countries. The international community is the countries that unanimously decided to hold COP29 in Azerbaijan, which is considered the largest event in the world.
It is also worth noting that when Ben Cardin was elected chairman of the committee, speaking about the recent processes in Karabakh, he said that the United States should stop providing security assistance to Azerbaijan.
This suggests that the United States is once again in its element. The Iraq and Syria scenarios are destined to be realized in Armenia; famous Armenians are also becoming participants in this game with tempting promises. At the heart of all this is Armenia’s withdrawal from Russia’s orbit and the withdrawal of the country’s military contingent from the north. But Russia does not seem to be going away easily. Therefore, it can be predicted that serious processes will occur in Armenia in the near future, and even a civil conflict may occur.
