The US presidential election will take place on November 5, 2024. Donald Trump and Kamala Harris are competing for the White House this year after Joe Biden dropped out of the race under intense pressure following a disastrous first debate with Trump. The winner will take office on January 20, 2025, and along with the president, voters will also elect members of the House and Senate.
Key swing states
As in previous elections, the outcome of the race will be determined largely by results in several swing states. Pennsylvania, with its 19 electoral votes, traditionally one of the most important states, will once again be in the spotlight. Other battleground states include Arizona, Georgia, Wisconsin and Nevada, where Trump is seeking to regain the margin of victory lost in 2020. Florida and Ohio, once considered unpredictable, have become reliable territories for Republicans in recent years, but remain being important.
Process and timing of vote counting
On Election Day, polls typically close around 7 pm local time, but due to time differences, voting ends later on the West Coast, Alaska, and Hawaii. Results will begin to arrive slowly, and voters will vote by mail or vote early, which could have a significant impact on the timing of the count. As in previous years, preliminary results are expected to be known within a few days, but official confirmation may take longer.
When will the results be known?
While final election results are often weeks away, preliminary results are typically “called” based on recounts in key states. In 2020, Biden’s victory was declared four days after the vote, when his support in Pennsylvania allowed him to cross the threshold of 270 electoral votes.
