They are accused of trying to influence the 2024 US presidential election, the campaign for which is in full swing. US Attorney General Merrick Garland announced on Wednesday 4 September the indictment of two directors of the Russian media outlet RT and the seizure of 32 Internet domain names linked to Russia.
The two RT executives are also on a sanctions list published on Wednesday by the US Treasury Department. The sanctions affect a total of ten individuals and two entities, it said in a press release, including officials from the group “Pro-Kremlin hackers” RaHDit and NGO Dialog accused by US authorities of using artificial intelligence in disinformation campaigns “used against electoral campaigns” in the United States.
In addition to these trials, “The Department of Justice has seized 32 Internet domain names used by the Russian government and Russian state-sponsored actors to engage in a clandestine campaign to interfere with and influence our nation’s election and the outcome.”Garland said during a press conference.
