Irish authorities are responsible, because Tikkok, like many technical giants, has its own European headquarters in Ireland. There are low taxes, many data centers and well -trained employees – but, of course, also the rules for protecting data from the European Union.
Currently, the platform is imposed on the payment of millions and adjusting its data processing within six months so that it complies with the rules. Tiktok can still appeal against punishment.
During the investigation, Tiktok announced that the Irish supervisor did not say that user data from Europe on servers in China. However, in April, the platform admitted that this happened to a limited degree, and incorrect information was given.
Tiktok must guarantee the EU data protection standard
According to the Vice President of DPC Graham Doyle, the general rules for data protection applies to the fact that the high level of data protection in the EU is also applied if personal data is transferred to other countries. Nevertheless, Tiktok could not guarantee that data from European users to whom employees in China would have access were protected, as in the EU. For example, Tikok did not take into account the possible access of the Chinese authorities.
With his short video, Tiktok is one of the most popular social networks. The application is part of the Chinese group by BYTEDANCE with a headquarters in Beijing. In China, where people use the censored version of the service, the Duyin application is called. Tiktok always emphasizes that most of Baijans belong to international investors.
Nevertheless, the maternal company should also worship the Chinese authorities in Beijing. Since the algorithm – the heart of the application that selects a video for users and, thus, saves them for a long time in front of the screen – was developed in China, Beijing is necessary.
This fact is a problem, especially for the sale of Tickcock in the United States, so the application has recently got into the headlines. The US Law provides that ByTedance sells the application in the United States or otherwise should leave the network. Politicians and experts in the United States fears that Americans can fall into the hands of the Chinese government through the platform or that public opinion can be manipulated.
Tikok has still rejected such accusations. US President Donald Trump extended the deadline for sale, which was supposed to be done on January 19.
DPC often produced millions of fines for international technological companies. In 2021, Amazon was taken for a fine of 746 million euros, and in 2023 the META group was to pay 1.2 billion euros. Tickcock was also occupied by a fine of 345 million euros in 2023, while it was about users under the age of 18 years.
The Irish Data Protection Commission has currently announced a new punishment that the case was perceived very seriously. According to Tiktok, the data is now deleted. Nevertheless, further regulatory measures are considered in consultation with the EU data protection authorities.
