Valladolid commemorates funeral of Irish Prince ‘Red’ Hugh O’Donnell

With bagpipes and a horse-drawn hearse, the procession travelled through the centre of the capital of Valladolid.

This Friday, the streets of Valladolid became the scene of the traditional ffuneral of Irish Prince “Red” Hugh O’Donnell, whodied in September 1602 in Simancas and to whom the king of Spain of the time, Felipe III, granted the celebration of a funeral “with royal honors” in the city of Valladolid.

An event organized by the Tourism Department of the City Hall in collaboration with the Hispanic-Irish Association, where the Irish Ambassador to SpainFrank Smith.

The procession left at 7 p.m. Royal Palace of Valladolid, located in Plaza San Pablo, where a horse-drawn hearse has carried the coffin of the Irish prince who rebelled against the English monarchy in the late 16th century, causing the Nine Years’ War.

The coffin was covered with historical emblems of Ireland and Spain and was carried on the shoulders to the car, which was also escorted by the historical royal guard on horsebackas well as members of the Tercios, Franciscan monks, soldiers with torches, standard-bearers and, in front, an irish soldier playing the bagpipes soloalthough escorted by a bagpipe band from Valladolid.
