Valladolid immerses itself in the “special creative universe” of David Lynch

Investigating the iconography that marked the “life and artistic career” of the director of Twin Peaks and delving into his “particular” creative universe, such is the aim of the exhibition ‘The fantastic surrealism of David Lynch’which was inaugurated in the municipal exhibition hall of La Pasión, in Valladolid. The city is thus revving up its engines for one of its “most anticipated events of the year”, declared the Councilor for Culture and Education, Irene Carvajal, in reference to the 69th edition of the International Week of Valladolid cinema, which will begin on October 18.

Antonella Montinaro, curator of the exhibition, explained that it was during a trip to Paris in 2007, when she saw the exhibition “L’air est en feu” at the Fondation Cartier, with the work of the versatile American artist, that she began thinking about this exhibition which “grew” over time. It is a project “designed to be very didactic,” said Montinaro, who believes that it will thus be possible to better understand the influences that the North American has had throughout his career. To this end, The exhibition tour begins with a focus on surrealism and his mark on the seventh art, with references like Fernand Léger, Marcel Duchamp, René Clair, Man Rray and Luis Buñuel.

It’s the “prelude” to a show that then dives fully into “Lynch’s world”, with a first stop on some of his short films from the 60s, including “Six Men Get Sick”. The rest of the exhibition fully immerses the visitor in the filmography that marked his career, from “The Elephant Man”, the project which allowed him to realize “bigger” productions, to “Dune”, “Blue Velvet” or “Mullholand”. To drive’. Among them you can see posters, photochromes, audiovisual fragments and still images. Concerning the latter, the curator highlighted that “many of them almost look like paintings”, recalling the influence of artists such as Francis Bacon, Dalí, Hopper or Magritte.

He also clarified that his intention with this exhibition was to create the visitor the feeling of being inside a film by the director and screenwriterhence the space dedicated to music, in which the role played by the composer Angelo Badalmenti, “close collaborator” of the filmmaker, in Lynch’s work is highlighted. Thus, the “sacristy” of the exhibition room hosts a sound experience linked to the work of this musician from the legendary “Twin Peaks”. This production, “a precursor to the television series we see today” and which “catapulted” the director’s fame among the “general public”, is another of the protagonists of the exhibition. The exhibition route ends with two series of lithographs made by the artist in the 70s and 80s and another immersive experience with the famous “black lodge”, so relevant to the plot of the aforementioned series from the 90s.
