Valladolid mountaineer dies after fall from great height in Picos de Europa

A 68-year-old mountaineer from Valladolid died this afternoon following a fall on the north face of the San Carlos Peakin the Andara massif, in the Picos de Europa (Cantabria).

The Cantabrian Government reported that the deceased was a very experienced mountaineer who, after reaching the summit, was making the descent and that is when he suffered the accident. The deceased, originally from Valladolid, suffered a fall from a great height, as reported by Cantabria 112 to this medium.

The man allegedly rushed while walking with another companion, aged 52, who was rescued unharmed.

The Civil Guard alerted the 112 Emergency Assistance Center of Cantabria around 2:30 p.m. and the Cantabrian Government helicopter as well as the armed institute’s own troops were mobilized. The body was recovered by the GREIM of the Civil Guard.

The Civil Protection Intervention Team (EPIC) of the Government of Cantabria was also alerted, while carrying out a mountain exercise in the Picos de Europa, just over an hour from the scene of the accident, even if she ultimately did not intervene.

Once the mountaineer’s death was confirmed by the medical team of the Government of Cantabria, he was guarded by the Civil Guard to be transported in the Civil Guard helicopter.

For his part, the uninjured climber was rescued and transported by helicopter to the Tama helipad, where he was treated by the Cantabrian firefighters and transported to the Potes health center.
