Valladolid’s historic Bimbo factory closes its doors: 166 workers take to the streets

The Bimbo company announced on Wednesday the closure of its historic factory in Valladolid, which directly employs 166 workers, in addition to 40 other subcontracted workers.

The company has summoned union representatives to a first meeting of the Employment Regulation File (ERE) negotiation committee which will take place next Wednesday, September 25, at 11:00 a.m.

Starting next week, the company and workers’ representatives will begin contact with the ERE negotiating committee, which has 30 days to reach an agreement. The Enterprise Commission intends to contact the Valladolid City Council and the Regional Government of Castilla y León.

Currently, the Bimbo factory in Valladolid produces branded products such as its famous donuts -glass and candy-, pepitos, Donettes, Trigetón and Mini bollycaos. The company has another production center in Medina del Campo (Valladolid), as well as others in Barcelona or Azuqueca de Henares.

Rejection of ERE

The Bimbo Valladolid works council has categorically rejected the draft labor regulation (ERE) that the company had proposed for its factory in the city, in which 166 people work directly and 40 external workers, meaning that it would affect a total of 206 families.

As reported by the Comisiones Obreras (CCOO) union, the decision was communicated to the Works Council, made up of five CCOO delegates and four from the UGT, during a meeting that seemed ordinary this morning.

The human resources manager and the operations manager, both from the company at national level, attended the meeting and reported the closure of the plant, justifying it by the fact that Bimbo is not achieving the necessary economic indicators in Spain.

The union organization considers that the factory is “totally viable” because in Valladolid “no bad economic indicators have been recorded and the workers of this factory have the lowest wages compared to the rest of the factories in Spain.”

Negotiation Commission

On September 25, the negotiating commission will be constituted and from that moment there will be a minimum of 30 days of consultation period on the ERA.

Félix Fernández, chairman of the works council, said he hoped that at the start of negotiations the company would explain the “real causes of the closure” and that there would be some approach on the part of Bimbo to avoid layoffs.

Likewise, Fernández indicated that the committee is meeting with the workers today to discuss the situation. There has already been a meeting in the morning, another in the afternoon and another in the evening to inform all the teams of this factory in the industrial zone of San Cristóbal.

This closure would be added to a season of closures of Bimbo factories in Spain, which has already affected El Vergel (Alicante) or Paracuellos (Madrid). In Castile and León, Bimbo has another factory that it bought two years ago from Siro in Medina del Campo (Valladolid), but it is responsible for manufacturing different products.
