If the instruments used in this program are simple twins (two concert pianos), the performers seem more of the Siamese type. At each fusion point (phrasing, timbre, intensity), its interpretation does not necessarily imply a renunciation of personal imprint. The feline flexibility of Wilhem Latchoumia and the sculptural plasticity of Vanessa Wagner combine ideally to serve a nonconformist reading of the works. To benefit Erik Satie, open the album with a way to start jazzy, then clownish and, to close, with a First gymnopedia who never stops saying goodbye. Still very little known in France, the Italian violinist of German origin and naturalized American Augustin Hadelich is an important artist, whose strong temperament is distinguished by an unconventional choice of repertoire. As demonstrated by this album in tribute to American music, which covers a very wide field of musical figures and styles. From the romanticism of Amy Beach to the avant-garde of Charles Ives, passing through the minimalism of John Adams, without forgetting Leonard Bernstein and Aaron Copland, but also pieces of the most popular music. Sensual, moving, playful, exalted, joyful, the violinist, whose spectacular technique adapts to all modes of execution (blues, jazz, swing), reveals himself as a first-rate rhythmic performer, giving away this electrifying ride. on American soil (either as a soloist or masterfully accompanied on the piano by Orion Weiss) of authentic lyrics of nobility. Revealed in the mid-2010s among artists under the name. “New British jazz scene”, tenor saxophonist and composer Nubya García attracted more attention with her album Fountain in 2020. Here it is with Odysseya magnificent collection of twelve compositions, with, in addition to the musicians who usually accompany him – keyboardist Joe Armon-Jones, trumpeter Sheila Maurice-Grey, trombonist Rosie Turton, bassist Daniel Casimir and drummer Sam Jones –, a group of strings. What it provides, thanks to Nubya García’s fine arrangements, is breadth, avoiding remaining only in highlighted moments, a sometimes dreamlike atmosphere (Odyssey, Clarity…). As a soloist, Nubya García provides a full sound, highlighting lyricism, through the flow of interpretation, a form of musical spirituality.
