The presidents of Venezuela and Iran, Nicolás Maduro and Masud Pezeshkian, are seeking to expand relations and investments between their countries, for which the authorities of the two governments held several meetings this week in Tehran, as reported on Friday by the state channel Venezolana de Televisión (VTV).
On its website, VTV reported that Pezeshkian had a meeting with Venezuelan Minister of Transportation and Chairman of the Joint Economic Commission between Iran and Venezuela, Ramón Velásquez, who went to Tehran “to develop trade relations”without knowing the details of the areas in which they plan to work on this extension of economic ties.
“The President announced the support of the Islamic Republic of Iran for Venezuela’s entry into the group (of emerging economies) led by Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa) BRICS,” the letter said, citing official information.
Similarly, the minister “sent warm greetings” Maduro’s meeting with Iranian high authorities, while “I wished Pezeshkian success”whose government began at the end of July.
“Velázquez highlighted Maduro’s special interest in continue efforts deepen relations in various fields, especially in the economic and energy fields. Likewise, he expressed confidence that the upward trend in relations will continue strongly in the new governments of the two countries,” the VTV note said.
Iran is a strong ally of the Venezuelan government and was one of the first countries to congratulate Maduro on his victory in the July 28 election, a result that has been questioned inside and outside the South American nation, especially after the majority opposition denounced fraud.
Caracas and Tehran signed in June 2022 a 20-year cooperation agreement in the energy sector and other areas.
