Venezuelan Chancellor Speaks With Albares But Refuses To Give Him Information About Two Detained Basques

He picked up the phone and spoke to him, but he didn’t give him any information. Yvan GilChancellor of Venezuela Nicolas Maduroresponded to José Manuel Albares’ call on Tuesday, but refused to respond to his demands.

The Spanish Foreign Minister reminded him that he failure to fulfill “his obligation” report on “the identity, location and charges against the two detained Spaniards, according to the Vienna Convention“.

But the minister of the Chavista regime did not pay attention to it. He did not do it to his Spanish colleague Albares, although he had on the other side of the phone. He didn’t do it at verbal notewhich was sent to him by the Spanish embassy in Caracas. And he did not do so either when the head of Spanish diplomacy summoned the ministry to Venezuelan Chargé d’Affaires in Madridgiven that the ambassador was summoned for consultations last week.

The rudeness could not have been more complete, but the Foreign Affairs sources limited themselves to giving some details, without adding any comments. “We are in our position, do what it takes to protect two compatriots” explained a spokesman for the ministry, a few minutes after Albares received the leader of the democratic opposition, Edmundo Gonzalezin its facilities.

Albares sent an official letter to Joseph Borrellhis predecessor and High Representative of the EU for Foreign Policy. He asks that the chapter on Venezuela be included on the agenda of the next EU Council. The minister has already made a proposal for strengthen the sanctions package against the Maduro regimeuntil the last meeting, without reaching the agreement of the Twenty-Seven.

Upon arriving at the government control session in the Senate on Tuesday, Albares confirmed that four days had passed since Caracas announced on television the arrest of Jose Maria Basoa And Andres Martinezas a suspected “terrorist” and did not inform the authorities in his home country.

“We still have no confirmation of identifynor of place where they are, nor costs against the two detained Spaniards,” the minister acknowledged.

The arrest was revealed last Saturday by Diosdado Hair, strong man of the regime and current Minister of the Interior. Cabello came to link Basoa and Martinez of being linked to the National Intelligence Center (CNI) and of being on Venezuelan territory, as part of a plot hatched with the United States to overthrow the regime and eliminate Maduro.

consular protection

The Spanish minister informed the Venezuelan Minister of Foreign Affairs that Spain “will exercise its diplomatic and consular protection” of the two Spaniards. But this is precisely what the Maduro regime is avoiding by refusing.

The two Basques arrested in this Caribbean country, accused of having participated in a CIA plot to assassinate the Venezuelan leader, have not received the legal advice to which they are entitled, for example, since their arrest in late August.

Albares maintains constant contact with the families, as does the General Directorate of Consular Services and even the Consulate General of Spain itself. “We will send you as soon as possible all the information we have in these such complex and difficult times“, which is not much, according to Foreign Affairs.

While the two young people were already under arrest – reported missing after crossing the Colombian border, according to their relatives – the diplomatic crisis erupted publicly after the Minister of Defense, Marguerite Roblescalled the Maduro regime a “dictatorship.” Thus, the Spanish ambassador, Ramon Santoswas summoned by Chancellor Gil, to be reprimanded.

And since then, the two young Basques have been linked to the National Intelligence Centre (CNI). EL ESPAÑOL has already reported that Sources from the CNI and Moncloa have denied being agents of the Spanish secret services. “They are just two poor children that the Maduro regime has taken hostage,” they emphasize.

And this Tuesday, it was Albares himself who rejected it: “We have made this clear to the Venezuelan authorities,” the minister insisted firmly. “Today, the Minister of Defense confirmed to me again that these two citizens They have no connection with any Spanish public body.even less with the CNI”.
