Venezuelan justice orders arrest of opposition leader Edmundo González Urrutia

A Venezuelan court issued a judgment on Monday Arrest warrant issued for former Venezuelan opposition candidate Edmundo Gonzalez Urrutia after accepting the request of the public prosecutor against the opponent. Urrutia was proclaimed winner of the presidential elections held at the end of July and in which the National Electoral Council (CNE) gave victory to the president of the country, Nicolas Maduroresults that have been questioned internationally.

The First Special Court of First Instance with supervisory functions and jurisdiction over cases related to Crimes associated with terrorism ordered the arrest of González Urrutia for the alleged crimes of “usurpation of functions”, “forgery of a public document”, “incitement to disobedience of the laws”, “conspiracy”, “sabotage aimed at damaging systems” and “association,” as confirmed by the public prosecutor on its Instagram social media account.

Earlier, Deputy Prosecutor Luis Ernesto Dueñez had requested González’s arrest, a request that comes after the former opposition candidate did not appear at the court on Fridaywho is investigating him for the publication on the Internet of data that would prove his victory in the June 28 electionsThis is the third time he has refused to appear.

Maduro justifies the decision and Machado accuses him

Maduro justified this arrest warrant by considering “unacceptable” that González “does not recognize the laws”, in reference to his rejection of both the electoral results and the institutions controlled by Chavismo that approved these elections.

“How are you going to say that you do not recognize the electoral power? How are you going to say that you are not going to recognize the electoral results? (…) In other words, Are you above the law?Maduro spoke on a television broadcast reported by the newspaper ‘El Nacional’.

For her part, opposition leader Maria Corina Machado assured that the Venezuelan government had “lost all sense of reality” due to its “threats against the elected president”an action that “crosses a new line.”

“Maduro has lost all touch with reality. The arrest warrant issued by the regime to threaten President-elect Edmundo González crosses a new line that only strengthens the determination of our movement. “Venezuelans and democracies around the world are more united than ever in our search for freedom,” he expressed on his account on the social network X.

The public prosecutor had already warned that If he did not show up, he would understand that there was a “danger of escape” and “danger of obstruction” of investigations. The opposition has published documents showing that González is the one who really won the meeting of July 28, to the detriment of the current president, Nicolás Maduro, with the support of the National Electoral Council (CNE) and the Supreme Court of Justice (TSJ). -two bodies controlled by Chavismoeither-.
