Venezuelan pharmaceutical market grew 57% in July, union says

The Venezuelan pharmaceutical market grew by 57.5% last July compared to the same month of 2023, according to data provided this Friday to EFE by the Chamber of the Pharmaceutical Industry (Cifar).

A few 28.56 million drugs were distributed on the market last July, while in the seventh month of 2023 there were about 18.13 million, the growth of this sector is therefore maintained, which contracted by 75% between 2014 and 2019, the union said.

On the other hand, the cumulative total for the first seven months of 2024 reached 174.95 million medicines, or 44.6% more compared to the same period last year, when 120.99 million was distributed, Cifar noted.

The industrial chamber highlighted the increase in the availability of hormones, antiparasiticsproducts for diabetes and the digestive system, cardiovascular diseases and the central nervous system, among others.

To strengthen the sector, the organization has asked the authorities, among other actions, promote the granting of creditspromote the creation of laws that protect national industry, establish alliances and reduce taxes on the import of raw materials.

Venezuela has been in a seven-year economic crisiswhich has started to improve slightly since 2021, after years of widespread shortages that affected citizens’ access to medicines and medical supplies.
