Vima Foodsthe largest food distributor in the Cuba and a company very active in several American countries, is negotiating with Spanish supermarkets to enter Spain, according to reliable sources close to OKDIARIO. The company, despite a long history in Americais based in A Coruña, but does not currently offer its products on Spanish territory.
“So far, Vima Foods does not work in Spain although it is headquartered here, but there are several negotiations and conversations with supermarkets to enter the country,” the sources indicate.
The company “has 30 years operating in Cuba”, according to the same sources. Since then, it has become the main company in the sector in this Caribbean country. However, most of its activity is concentrated in tourist places, that is to say in the hotels and areas where it is necessary to distribute food for foreigners.
However, given the crisis suffered by the Cuban tourism sector since the end of pandemicthe company had to reinvent itself to overcome the difficulties. However, Vima Foods also distributes throughout much of the United States, so its business in America is more than protected.
In other words, the plan to enter Spain is not due to the decline of Cuban tourism, one of its main sources of income, but rather to an expansion strategy.
As OKDIARIO learned, one of the supermarkets with which the food distributor negotiates is Gadisthe line of Galician establishments. The reason is obvious: Vima Foods’ head office is located in La Coruña and that of Gadis in Betanzos, a few kilometers south of the Herculian city.
Vima Foods will compete in Spain
The A Coruña food distributor offers numerous products and has a particularly extensive catalog, with frozen foodvegetables, fruits, purees, oilsyogurts… That is, everything necessary to become a great competitor to the commercial companies currently operating in the country. Something that becomes particularly relevant when considering his trip to the American continent.
More specifically, Vima Foods is present in Cuba, the United States, China, Mexicothe Dominican Republic or Panama, places whose brand has become an integral part of popular culture. All operated from Galicia.
Therefore, if negotiations with Gadis continue and an agreement is reached, the company will enter Spain in force. These supermarkets are present in Galicia and Castile and Leónand are in the process of opening their first branch in Madrid.
To date, the Gadis brand maintains approximately 8,000 jobs in Galicia and has established itself as the most representative supermarket in the community. This strong presence in Galicia has led the company to expand into the neighboring region, Castilla y León, where it has an important logistics warehouse located in the town of Medina del Campo.
From there, Gadis distributes its products throughout a large part of the Castilian-Leonese region, where it currently supports 1,500 workers, according to the same sources. Thus, supermarkets can be seen in the provinces of Lion, Palence, Salamanca, Valladolid And Avila.
The company has, in total, 214 establishmentsincluding those of the Claudio brand, Gadis franchise, which is the name given to the group. Actually, Claudio It already has a store in the Spanish capital, Claudio Express, located in the Plaza de Santa María de la Cabeza.
Claudio has grown more than Gadis, since it is also present in Castile and León and Galicia, but it has opened stores in Asturiasas well as in Madrid. Therefore, if everything goes as planned, Vima Foods would enter Spain through some supermarkets that are expanding. expansion throughout the peninsular territory.
