Viscofan and Engie agree to install an “innovative” biomass boiler in Navarre to produce thermal energy

THE Navarrese company Viscofan and Engie have signed an agreement for the installation of an “innovative” biomass boiler in the facilities of Viscofan in Cáseda (Navarre) For generate thermal energyas reported this Tuesday in a joint press release.

This project led by Viscofan is part of the sustainable development action plan that the group has been working on since 2018, the objective of which is to “find pioneering solutions that Optimize the thermal use of products and the rejections of the production process”.

Concretely, it is the first boiler installed in the world that combines forest biomass with a cellulose casing as fuel, as both companies point out. Cellulose casing is a type of casing made from cellulose used in the production of meat products.

In this context, this collaboration “strengthens the commitment of the two companies to the sustainability and the reduction of carbon emissions, in line with the principles of the circular economy and efficient use of resources.

With an installed capacity of 7.5 tonnes of steam per hour, equivalent to 5 MWt, the new boiler It will enter service in December 2025. It will be built under the “boot” modality (build, own, operate and transfer) for a period of 15 years.

Engie will be responsible for the management, operation and maintenance of this installation located at the Viscofan factory until 2040.

ENERGY INNOVATION AND CIRCULAR ECONOMY

The new installation is distinguished by the use of forest biomass and cellulosic casingwhich will optimize the energy performance of the plant, using surplus from the production process as fuel.

The general director of Viscofan Spain, Inigo Martinezstressed that this project is the result of many years of work in search of technical and regulatory alternatives to implement circular and sustainable economic models.

“We are delighted to have the collaboration of a leading company like Engie with whom we have worked in a very participatory way to implement this pioneering solution in the world that will also help us in our commitment to reduce our carbon footprint,” added Martínez.

For her part, the general director of Engie Solutions in Spain, Janis Rey, said that “this initiative is a clear example of our commitment to sustainable and innovative energy solutions that not only reduce carbon emissions, but also add value to industrial products not intended for sale, thus contributing to a circular economy model.”
