German politics has given Third Vice-President and Minister for the Ecological Transition, Teresa Ribera, an important portfolio: she will be Executive Vice-President of the European Commission. with responsibilities in both a clean, fair and competitive transition as head of the important Competition position.
“He will be responsible for competition policy and will ensure that Europe continues to deliver on the objectives of the European Green Deal: industrialize and decarbonize the economy at the same time“, explained Von der Leyen during the presentation of the charges this morning.
The one appointed by the government of Pedro Sánchez thus assumes one of the most important portfolios of the Community Executive. Will be responsible for the European Union’s competition policya task so far entrusted to Danish liberal Margrethe Vestager, who has won many battles against US tech giants. Vestager’s position is quite independent from the presidency of the European Commission.
At the same time, her work as Spanish Minister for Ecological Transition lays the foundations for the tasks that will have to be carried out at European level to achieve the goal of a decarbonised economy by 2050. At the same time, she knows the most technocratic district of Brussels. When, in the second half of last year, Spain held the rotating presidency of the Council of the EU, it was responsible for seeking consensus among the Twenty-Seven on complex agreements, such as the electricity market reform.
In the groups formulated in recent weeks, Ribera was considered for other important positions within the European Commission. His profile is suitable to become the next Commissioner of Climate and Environment or Social, Digital and Green Transition. What is clear is that the profile of the Spanish woman offers guarantees after having led the ecological transition in Spain with the emphasis placed, in parallel, on the social part that the just transition implies.
