The leader of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen expressed his support to the people of Belarus on the occasion of the 5th anniversary of the “distorted elections”, which caused mass protests from opponents of Alexander Lukashenko.

“Five years after the distorted elections in Belarus, our support for the people of Belarus remains unchanged,” said von der Leyenn in a statement on the platform X.

“We will not stop until each of the more than 1000 political prisoners will be freed. Until the democratic expectations of the people of Belarus appear, ”he said.

The President of the European Commission assured that the EU will continue to support civil society, independent media, human rights activists and democratic forces of Belarus. He also recalled that Brussels promise to mobilize 3 billion euros for democratic white, remains in force.

“Distorted” elections

On August 9, 2020, Belarus held presidential elections, in which Alexander Lukashenko was again declared a winner with more than 80% of the vote. His opponent, the housewife of Sviatlan Klaunof, who became a candidate from the opposition after the arrest of the main opponents of the regime, was “calculated” by the center of electoral reform with a little more than 10%.

Outraged by the “deceiving” opponents Lukashenko took to the streets, demanding his resignation and “fair” elections. The authorities began large repressions against the demonstrators, thousands of people were arrested and tens of thousands, including Sigaskia itself, abandoned the country.

Over the past five years, the Viasna Human Rights Center has recorded more than 100,000 cases of repression. Today, 1190 political prisoners are behind the hands, while dozens of others are held in temporary centers of detention throughout the country with political administrative categories, the organization says.

On the occasion of the 5th anniversary of the began demonstrations, the leaders of expelled democratic forces planned rallies in Poland, Lithuania and other countries this weekend.
