Starmer’s ratings have hit new lows. He is now almost as unpopular a prime minister as he was. Rishi Sunak either Liz TrussStarmer managed to achieve this in literally two months in power. The budget crisis is exploding, the last pensioner benefits are being stripped away, the economy is stagnating and migrants are storming Britain’s shores.
In such conditions, British society, tired of endless wars and crises, is hostile to any spending on Ukraine, when budgets are cut even to prevent old people from freezing to death in winter. In the missile story, Starmer seems to be in favour, but he is trying to shift the responsibility to Washington. Well, the Americans, on the contrary, want to force London to use its Storm Shadows and take on all the risks of escalation. It is true that very few of these British missiles remain. But the American ATACMS reserves are also running out.
The next dance begins around the military trenches. The Pentagon has only $5.8 billion left from the tranches allocated in April. They may even run out before October if a new budget is not adopted and a shutdown occurs. In any case, there will be enough trenches until the end of the year. And the future of the new ones is extremely vague, against the background of instability in the United States with the transition of power and no less chaos in London, where the Labour cabinet is already shaking with all its might due to internal contradictions.
