Forty Geacam soldiers took part this Wednesday morning in cleaning the streets of the mountain town of Letur, in Albacete. The city was hit by a huge flood, which left six people missing, as well as serious property damage throughout the historic center of the city.

From the delegation of the Community Council of Albacete, it is explained that these troops are added to the 150 who were already carrying out work in the city, while the Civil Guard continues the search for people whose whereabouts are not known, supported by drones equipped with night cameras. .

Firefighters from the Municipality of Albacete, staff from Civil Protection and the City Hall itself, as well as others from the region, also work in the city. Military and environmental agents also arrived in Letur.

Necessary machinery will also be incorporated to begin debris removal work Wednesday morning.

Letur City Hall asked citizens not to go to the city, to avoid “crowds”, but thanked the “infinity” of proposals to collaborate on the system. “In the event that the emergency system requires the collaboration of citizens, it will be announced in advance,” they emphasize in a post on Facebook.

The mayor of Letur, Sergio Marín, described the situation as an “unprecedented catastrophe” and added in statements to Cadena Ser that there were people missing, beyond the official figures. Marín assured that “all possible means” must be mobilized.

Around 40 residents spent the night at the local school, which became a temporary shelter on Tuesday afternoon, to accommodate those who could not spend the night at home. The delegate of the Castile-La Mancha government in the province, Pedro Antonio Ruiz, highlighted on Tuesday evening that part of the city was without electricity and that telephone coverage was also affected by the heavy rains.

“Several houses suffered terrible damage. It’s a tragedy, but tomorrow it will not rain and we will be able to return to work,” he concluded. The school will not open to students and the management team is helping families who have need.

The delegate will offer more information during a press conference with the city’s mayor, Sergio Marín.
