We Speak Spanish gets a school in Valencia to teach basic subjects in Spanish and sets a precedent

The association We speak Spanish sat down one previous in the Valencian Community using an educational center to teach main subjects In Castilian and put an end to the imposition of teaching almost entirely in Catalan: only ethics or religion were taught and hours of tutoring with teachers of the other official language were counted.

This step follows a lawsuit filed by the father of a student, advised by this entity chaired by Gloria Lago, as well as by another complaining parent from the same school.

The Ministry of Education has ensured that the CEIP Guillem d’Entença in the municipality of El Puig (Valencia) complies with the Linguistic Center Project (PLC), with a 25% minimum teaching time in Castilian.

When the Superior Court of Justice of the Valencian Community (TSJCV) ordered precautionary measures to respect this linguistic percentage, regional officials sent the Educational Inspection to check again if the regulations were respected, as published ABC. Today, finally, the Regional Administration is abandoning the judicial route and the educational center will be invited to teach at least one basic subject in Spanish.

Fourth primary pupils have been deprived of this possibility since March 2022 since the school council changed the basic language to teach the language. Mathematics in Valencian, in order to have continuity with the next course. On the other hand, without any consistency, this same discrepancy was not corrected in the area of environmental knowledge, so that both ended up with this status of language teaching.

Gloria Lake has now expressed its satisfaction after having achieved its request for this minimum in the educational offer of the center. His association, Hablamos Español, has informed and supported other families they even go so far as to go to court to demand the free choice of language, usually the mother tongue, in order to promote the best results and grades of their children.

These conflicts have their origins in previous regulations supported by the Law of Multilingualism promoted by Compromís in the governmental coalition of the Generalitat Valenciana with the Socialist Party Ximo Puig at the head, even if this entity criticized its successor – from the PP and before Vox – for not having corrected what it considers to be an injustice, even with the new law on educational freedom. This latest case in Valencia could constitute a turning point and a change in trend.

“This child is in primary school, he has the right that at least social and natural sciences, or mathematics, are taught in Spanish, but in this center these two subjects are taught in Valencian,” said Hablamos Español in a press release.

“This family and we speak Spanish are impatiently waiting for the Guillem d’Entença school to tell us which of the two main subjects will now be taught in Spanish,” they added, after highlighting the long journey they have experienced with this requirement that they consider fundamental.

Gloria Lago: “Reason prevailed”

“We are happy that there is reign THE mental health“It was incomprehensible that the Popular Party demanded for Catalonia what it does not respect in the Valencian Community,” Lago said. According to him, “the law which will come into force next year, it seems insufficient if we compare it to the regulations that exist in all countries with linguistic co-officiality where, without exception, what Habamos Español proposes applies: lines in each language, with the other language as linguistic subject.

However, the association recognizes progress in regulatory change. “However, we appreciate positively improvements that the new government has included, such as the freedom to use the student’s language during their studies exams and jobs, something we fought a lot for since we speak Spanish,” adds Lago.
