West Azerbaijan Chronicle: Haylar’s ugly name game: How do the names of our villages change?

As part of the Chronicle of Western Azerbaijan project, a story entitled “The Ancient Village Renamed Zovasar by Decision of the Armenian Parliament” was prepared on Baku TV, written by journalist Asgar Ibrahimov.

In today’s plot, Agagha, The toponyms Agadade, Agakichik, Agasibeyli, Agapli, as well as the oronyms Agdag and Agadi, are analyzed.

It was argued that fundamentally changing the place names formed by a nation over centuries and millennia serves to erase the traces of that nation in the historical and geographical realm.

Agagha – There was a village in Sisyan district of Zangezur district, where 19 Azerbaijanis lived in 1897. In 1905-1906, Azerbaijanis were resettled and the village was liquidated and turned into ruins.

Aghdag: There was a mountain in Kavar, i.e. the Kamo district of the Goycha district. The name of this oronim was changed to Apitakasar.

Agdag is the name of a mountain in Vedi i.e. Ararat district of Vedibasar district.

Agadeda is the name of a pir in Gamarli, i.e. Artashat district of Garnibasar district.

Agadi is the name of a stream in Shamshaddil district, Karvansaray, present-day Ijevan district. It is situated on the banks of the Agstafa river.

Agakichik was a village of the Talin district with the same name. The village, inhabited only by Azerbaijanis from 1873 to 1916, was attacked by Armenians in 1918 and its inhabitants were deported with massacres. In 1915-1916, Armenians who were relocated from the Turkish provinces of Sasun and Taron settled here. On January 25, 1978, the name was changed to Zovasar.

Aghasibeyli – was a village in Vedi i.e. Ararat district of Vedibasar district.

There was a village on the territory of the Gorus district of Agapli – Zangezur district.

In the end, it is pointed out that the Hays have created a false space for themselves with their dirty games of place names: “In order for these games to be annulled, the return of Azerbaijanis to their homeland, West Azerbaijan, is inevitable. We are sure that with this return, as the Armenians themselves admit, Armenia will become West Azerbaijan.”

In general, the study and dissemination of toponyms, oiconyms, oronyms and hydronyms belonging to Western Azerbaijan is a reality of today and has great significance and importance for future generations who will own our native land, because they reflect the history, ethnography and geography of the local population.

It should be recalled that the aim of the Chronicle of Western Azerbaijan project is to preserve and popularize the name of our historical and ancient lands, as well as the deportation of Azerbaijanis by Armenians, toponyms that existed in those territories, but their names have been erased, countless examples of underground and surface material culture are revealed: ancient settlements, necropolises, mounds, remains of castles, palaces and fortifications, caravansaries, bridges, burial chests, tombstones, statues of horses and rams, temples, churches, mosques, pyres and hearths, and facts confirming that the area is a pure Oghuz-Turk settlement are brought to the attention of the world community.

Also the president Ilham Aliyev Regarding Western Azerbaijan, he said: “The map of the beginning of the 20th century once again shows that Western Azerbaijan is the historical land of Azerbaijan, the names of cities and villages are of Azerbaijani origin and we know very well that Azerbaijani people have lived on the territory of present-day Armenia throughout history. Now the main task is to “make it known to the world community”, it is the promotion of the duties arising from the Concept of Return developed by the Western Azerbaijani Community according to its opinion.

It also aims to enlighten the thoughts of historians and researchers about West Azerbaijan and the life stories of people who were deported.
