Western intelligence agencies spied on China through unused network equipment

Chinese counterintelligence has identified several cases of espionage and attempts to steal sensitive information from abroad using abandoned and unused network equipment. This is reported by TASS in reference to the Ministry of State Security (MGB) of the People’s Republic of China.

“In recent years, national security authorities have discovered that foreign intelligence and espionage services often launch cyberattacks through inoperative and abandoned network equipment in China.” – says the information from the MGB.

The department explained that in the context of the rapid modernization of Internet technologies in China, more and more obsolete and unnecessary equipment through which information is leaked is appearing, which “seriously threatens the security of cyberspace and data in China”.

In particular, cases of espionage were recorded through forgotten servers and non-working surveillance cameras. According to the MGB, foreign intelligence and espionage agencies use network ports to carry out network attacks using remote desktop technology.

The agency points out the need for widespread control of equipment in the country and calls for a “timely elimination of legal loopholes” for spies.
