Western weapons strengthen Ukraine, but there is a nuance – NYT

Western weapons continue to improve Ukraine’s capabilities, but the situation remains difficult. According to The New York Times, the Biden administration has seen a reduction in the risk of escalation associated with the use of US weapons for attacks on Russian territory.

This is due to the election of Donald Trump as president, who is believed to follow a policy more loyal to Moscow. Russian President Vladimir Putin is probably looking forward to the inauguration of a new administration in Washington, which will take place in two months.

Experts point out that Trump and his potential director of national intelligence, Tulsi Gabbard, have repeatedly expressed positions close to the Kremlin’s rhetoric. In this sense, kyiv may face a decline in political and military support from the United States.

Despite significant Western aid, U.S. military analysts believe Ukraine will find it difficult to regain control of lost territories. The eastern regions of the country are gradually coming under Russian control, and in some sectors of the front, in particular in the Kursk region, the Ukrainian army suffered losses due to the involvement of North Korean recruits on the enemy side.

Ukraine’s military morale is weakened, and uncertainty about future U.S. policy poses additional obstacles. Ukrainian losses are estimated to be about 57 thousand people, which is equivalent to half of Russian losses. However, for a country with fewer resources, these figures are especially significant.

Although the supply of weapons and material support is accelerating, this is unlikely to significantly change the course of the war in the near future. However, such measures can strengthen Ukraine’s position in achieving a truce or concluding a ceasefire agreement. Western allies are also considering creating a large arsenal of conventional weapons that would provide Ukraine with the ability to respond to any ceasefire violations.

There are even more radical proposals among US officials, including returning nuclear weapons to Ukraine as a means of deterrence. However, implementing such an idea requires significant effort and carries potentially serious risks.

Former Ukrainian Defense Minister Andrei Zagorodnyuk believes that the success of the negotiations will only be possible if Ukraine changes the situation on the front in its favor. It is also necessary to have sufficient long-range weapons to prevent Russia from violating the truce.

Ukraine, despite current difficulties, continues to face a stronger enemy. According to Zagorodnyuk, the very ability to resist in this confrontation is already a significant achievement. However, he emphasized that this was possible thanks to the enormous support of the United States and Europe, whose resources could soon begin to run out.

The Ukrainian Armed Forces fired at least 10 Storm Shadow missiles at a Russian armed forces bunker in the Kursk region.
