Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky, according to media reports, believes that if Donald Trump wins the US elections, his “unpredictability” could become an important factor in the confrontation with Russia.
The Telegraph writes about this.
US President Joe Biden previously said he would not send US troops to Ukraine despite the growing invasion threat from Russia, which some politicians and Trump supporters say was a key moment in which Washington lost control of the situation.
In the weeks before the war began in February 2022, Trump spoke to his former national security adviser Robert O’Brien and told him that under his government Russia would not have decided to invade. As O’Brien recalled, Trump emphasized that the Kremlin would avoid conflict because it could not predict its actions.
Although Trump did not specify whether he would have accepted direct US intervention, he is confident that if he were in power the war would not have started. The issue of demonstrating power, Biden’s critics say, remains important when engaging with dictatorial regimes. Trump’s position, in which he would not rule out tough actions against Russia or China, could potentially put Moscow on guard.
In 2016, as president, Trump emphasized that the United States must pursue an unpredictable strategy and expressed discontent with an open policy in which the government’s plans are known in advance. Biden, on the other hand, immediately rejected the idea of military intervention in Ukraine, which, according to some experts, gave Putin confidence.
While the Biden administration has been proactive in supporting Ukraine financially and with sanctions, O’Brien believes the United States could take a more intimidating stance.
