What is the difference between the flu and a cold? – DOCTOR’S STATEMENT

“Unlike acute respiratory viral infection (ARVI), influenza has a sudden onset.”

Oku.AzAccording to RIA Novosti, the well-known Russian infectious disease expert Andrei Pozdnyakov spoke about this.

He said that classic influenza has a symptom complex quite different from other infections.

“In the initial phase of the disease, a person can accurately pinpoint the time of onset of the illness to within an hour. Symptoms include high fever, intoxication, as well as headache, muscle and joint pain,” the doctor explained.

The infectious disease specialist emphasized that respiratory symptoms appear later.

“The cough appears 2 or 3 days after the onset of the flu. At first the cough is simple and then it becomes more severe,” he added.

Pozdnyakov said that flu complications are divided into two parts: early and late.

“Early complications include lung damage, primary influenza pneumonia, poisoning, as well as the possible development of damage to the central nervous system. Late complications include bacterial complications in the respiratory tract: sinusitis, tonsillitis, pharyngitis. In addition, the patient may have unstable temperature after the flu, fatigue and sweating,” the expert said.

The doctor said that special antiviral therapy can be used to prevent complications in the early stages of flu, but antibiotics should only be taken on the doctor’s recommendation.
