A 16-meter-long hyperreal sperm whale was stranded this morning on the shore of the Caspian Sea, in the Baku Boulevard area.
Oku.Az reports that during the COP29 summit, this work of art conveys a great message about the importance of protecting the environment and the seas and bodies of water.
Since morning, Balina’s installation has attracted the attention of hundreds of residents and guests of the city. Created by the Belgium-based Captain Boomer Collective, this installation combines reality with fiction. Since 2008, Balina has performed in major cities such as London, Paris, Warsaw, Adelaide and Madrid. However, this presentation is being made for the first time in the comprehensive and emotional context of the COP29 conference.
The “Captain Boomer Collective” was invited to Baku by the FINS initiative. This event includes panel discussions, film screenings, presentations and two photography exhibitions. One of them is an exhibition held in the COP29 Green Zone, in the FINS initiative pavilion, and the other, outdoors, on Baku Boulevard. These events are dedicated to current issues that threaten marine life, such as deep-sea mining and whaling in Norway, dolphin hunting in the Faroe Islands, the finning of more than 100 million sharks a year, and other critical issues. We believe that the installation of the whale will lead to deeper discussions and that our message will reach a broader audience.
The model seen on the coast of the Caspian Sea and sparking discussions was previously seen on the banks of the Garonne River in Bordeaux, France, in 2022.
Oku.Az reports that the life-size statue of a sperm whale washed ashore was intended to draw public attention to serious environmental problems.
An unusual art installation created by the Belgian art collective “Captain Boomer” is made with astonishing realism. The artists precisely created the anatomical features of the animal, including the characteristic shape of the head, skin folds and even teeth.
Sperm whales are considered the largest toothed whales found in the world’s oceans. Despite their impressive size, these majestic creatures are endangered due to water pollution, ship collisions, entanglement in fishing nets, and other anthropogenic factors.
It should also be noted that “Captain Boomer” previously exhibited similar sculptures of “beached whales” in London, Paris and other cities, and each time generated a great resonance among the public.
A huge creature was found on the corner of Baku Boulevard.
Oku.Az reports that images about it have been published on social networks.
