Vladimir Putin has stepped up his military efforts, sending some 50,000 Russian and North Korean troops to the Kursk region to recapture lost Ukrainian territory before Donald Trump is expected to take office in January.
According to British intelligence data published by the Telegraph newspaper, Russia could intensify its attacks with kamikaze drones in the coming days, using launch points located near the border with Ukraine.
The operation is expected to involve some 12,000 North Korean soldiers, which was possible thanks to the mutual military assistance pact between Russia and North Korea, signed this year.
According to Ukrainian analysts, Russia is likely preparing a major counteroffensive in the Kursk region, seeking to advance towards the neighboring Sumy region. To date, Russian troops have been able to regain control of about half of the territories that the Ukrainian army previously captured during an operation in August.
The commander-in-chief of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, Alexander Syrsky, said that Ukrainian positions in the Kursk region are under attack by “tens of thousands of soldiers,” including the best Russian strike units. At the same time, Western diplomats and NATO allies express concern that Russia is trying to seize as much territory as possible before Trump’s inauguration.
This could put him in a better position in potential peace talks.
